What's Self Myofascial Release?
Self myofascial release (SMR) is a technique that involves applying pressure to the muscles and soft tissue in the body using a foam roller, lacrosse ball, or other similar tools. The goal of SMR is to release tension and tightness in the muscles and fascia (a connective tissue that surrounds muscles), which can be caused by exercise, poor posture, or stress.
During SMR, the individual typically rolls or applies pressure to the affected area for several minutes at a time, using their own body weight to apply the pressure. This can help break up adhesions or "knots" in the muscles and fascia, which can improve circulation, increase range of motion, and reduce pain and soreness.
SMR can be done as a pre- or post-workout activity to help prepare the muscles for exercise or aid in recovery. It is also sometimes used as a form of self-care to help alleviate chronic pain or stiffness in the muscles and joints. It is important to note that SMR should be done carefully and under the guidance of a trained professional, as improper technique or overuse can cause injury.
